Advice

Whether you have a professional or personal interest in communication aids, you can meet a Communicate specialist (Speech & Language Therapist or Occupational Therapist) to talk about:

  • Practical issues
  • Policy issues
  • Service delivery issues
  • Funding for equipment
  • any other "AAC issues"

Examples of practical issues:

  • Assessment for communication aid use
  • Introducing a communication aid
  • Planning, running and evaluating a trial period of use
  • Helping someone to become a more effective communication aid user
  • Increasing communication opportunities
  • Rehearsing communication challenges
  • Reducing communication barriers
  • Choosing a symbol system
  • Organising communication aid vocabulary

Advice Sessions usually last one hour. We can book a shorter appointment if required, or a longer appointment to discuss complex issues or more than one topic.

Sometimes several people need to attend an Advice Session, including a communication aid user. If everyone hopes to take part in the discussion, we recommend that a maximum of four people meet with Communicate staff.
