Equipment Library
We have a wide range of equipment for
Assessment, Demonstration and Loan.
"High Tech" and "Low Tech" equipment:
- Standard devices, eg. "magic slates",
computers
- Purpose-built and customised communication
aids
- Personal speech aids, eg. amplifiers,
artificial larynxes
COMMUNICATE EQUIPMENT LOANS
Communicate clinical staff can advise on appropriate
equipment to borrow for trial use with individual
clients. We can advise on switches, interfaces,
communication application programs, symbol systems and
toys as well as communication aids and speech aids
themselves.
If you call in to collect equipment, our Equipment
Officer can demonstrate the equipment to you if you
wish. Please remember to make an appointment with
the Equipment Officer if you want the equipment
demonstrated, otherwise it will be packed up ready for
you to collect and the Equipment Officer might be busy
with something else and not able to see you.
If you need more help, please talk to one of our
clinical staff about an Advice Session or
training.
We loan equipment free of charge
- For trial use
- While equipment is being repaired
- To demonstrate to potential "funders"
- For teaching purposes
- To meet other short term needs
The loan period is one month for
most items
- The loan can be renewed if no one else needs
it
- After three months, we renew the loan every
three months
- If we need to recall the equipment for someone
else, we will give you one month's notice
- Some items are no longer commercially available
and are rarely requested for loan. These may be
available on "extended loan" (renewable every three
months)
- Some items are earmarked for other Communicate
services (Assessments, Advice Sessions and
Equipment Demonstrations), when not in use, you may
be able to borrow these items for a few days.
Collection, Delivery and Return
- Please contact us to borrow equipment as we do
not offer a "drop in" service
- We are open from 8:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to
Friday, and may be able to arrange collection or
return outside these hours
- If you cannot collect, we will arrange and pay
for the equipment to be delivered to you by secure
parcel carrier
- We will ask you to return the equipment by hand
or by secure parcel carrier
- The client's local Speech & Language
Therapy service usually arranges and pays for
equipment to be returned. When there is no
local service, we will arrange and pay for
equipment to be returned.
Complex Devices
These are devices which people cannot
use, or teach others to use, without training or
considerable previous experience. We will arrange
or provide training when necessary. This ensures
that:
- Good use is made of the loan period
- Equipment trials have the best chance of
success.

- All items are available for Assessments, Advice
Sessions, Equipment Demonstrations and may be
available for loan for a few days
- The second column shows whether we also have
examples of the item in our Loan Stock
- The number of items of each type in stock is
not shown
- Where there is a link to a Supplier's web site,
there might be other suppliers
- Other companies might supply a similar, if not
identical, product
- Other suppliers might be cheaper or provide a
better service
- A link to a supplier does not mean that we
"endorse" the supplier
